When was Sinclairs oyster bar moved? ›

Shambles Square is a square in Manchester, England. It was created in 1999, when The Old Wellington Inn and Sinclair's Oyster Bar were rebuilt there, having been moved from the Old Shambles nearby as part of major building works in the city following the 1996 Manchester bombing.

Sinclair's Oyster Bar's journey began over two centuries ago, making it one of Manchester's oldest pubs. Originally located a stone's throw away from its current spot, the bar has witnessed the city's evolution from the industrial revolution to the digital age.

The new landlord demolished part of the building and converted the rest into The King's Head Tavern in 1809. It later became known as Sinclair's, until oysters were introduced to the menu in 1845 and it became Sinclair's Oyster Bar, the name it retains to this day.

The mid-sixteenth-century building is Grade II-listed by Historic England (see here) (Fig. 2). The adjoining Sinclair's Oyster Bar is occasionally thought of as Tudor as well (see TimeOut here), but it is actually much later than The Old Wellington Inn and it dates to the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century.

Oysters were a constant in the diet of Native American tribes who lived on the East Coast, and were equally well prized and made use of by European when they came along. Oyster houses (also called oyster bars or saloons or restaurants) were easy to find, and the prices were reasonable.

The rest, as they say, is history. Did you know our building was moved in 1998? The half-timbered, Grade II listed building was completely dismantled and moved around 100m from its original site during a redevelopment programme.

Upon returning home, they would call each other to meet at the grocery store, which they began calling Raleigh's own version of 42nd Street. Thus the old grocery store at the corner of Jones and West streets was christened with a new name, giving birth to the legend.

The Union Oyster House is both the oldest restaurant in Boston and the oldest restaurant in continuous service in the country-its doors first opened to diners in 1826 when it was founded by Hawes Atwood.
