Mike McNeill's Diary for Thursday, November 4, 2010: Record voter turnout ... for magnoliareporter.com (2024)

We thought Tuesday's results would be hard to top, until we sawWednesday's figures. We're not talking about the election. We'retalking about the number of people who read about the election atmagnoliareporter.com. We set a new record for the number ofsite visitors since our launch on April 7, the previousrecord having been set on Tuesday. Wednesday's figure was 100visitors ahead of Tuesday, which were 800 better than our previousrecord. We were pleasantly surprised, but not that surprised asmagnoliareporter.com had the most comprehensive total electionfigures at an on-line news site first, the only news site reportageand video of Beth Anne Rankin's concession speech, and the earliestand broadest local election coverage. Also, the less amount ofsleep for any local news organization - but it was well worthit.

Speaking of first, let's hear it for Columbia County'svoting machine technicians, poll workers and electionofficials. Polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. At 9:05p.m., Columbia County was the first county in the state to havecomplete results posted on the Arkansas Secretary of State'selection website. Of course, if one had been at the courthouse, onewould have known the complete results just after 8:30 p.m. when thefinal precinct was electronically recorded. There are a fewArkansas counties that stay in a constant state of uproar overelection problems. Columbia County is where they can look if theywant to straighten things out.

We always find time to remember how much we hated paper ballotsduring elections. Columbia County has always been fairly modernwhen it came to voting machines, but we were stationed in HotSpring County through the mid 1980s, where they still used paperballots. They are mind blowing. We were once tasked with anotherperson by a clerk to count an 11-vote absentee box. It took usthree attempts to come up with the same count. We've nevervolunteered for anything like that since.

We're seeing more and more potholes. GarlandStreet is one street we traverse frequently that seems to have alot of them.

Of course, we're seeing more potholes because we're seeing morerain. Our present rainfall total for November is alreadyahead of two of the past four years. Maybe we are headinginto a rainy season. Rainy this time of year also means a potentialfor ice storms. We still remember 2000, and remind everyone thatnow is the time to have trees cut down and to buy electricalgenerators.

We were not surprised by the resignation of AaronStewart as executive director of the Magnolia Economic DevelopmentCorporation. We will be surprised if a new director ishired by mid-2011. We fear the MEDC is about to be on the verge forgaining the wrong type of reputation among potential economicdevelopers.
