Mildred "Millie" Dick - November 23, 1935 - August 29, 2021

Departed: 08/29/2021 (Enderlin)

Obituary Preview: On November 23, 1935, a long-awaited baby, Mildred Priscilla Bergh, was born to John and Susie (Branes) Bergh of rural Volga, SD. She was proud of her 100% Norwegian heritage. With her big sister Helen, the family was complete, and she enjoyed a carefree farm childhood with her large group of cousins. Millie graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton, SD and then moved to St. Paul, MN where she graduated with her Registered Nursing degree from Fairview Hospital. Her nursing career began in Albert Lea, MN and she made the fortuitous move to Fargo, ND for obstetrics at St. Lukes Hospital. She joined First Lutheran Church in downtown Fargo and one day was called to the church to meet a young single farmer by the name of Jim Dick who had seen an advertisem*nt about a Lutheran singles group. They were a match! They were united in marriage at First Lutheran in the “dry” town of Volga, SD on October 2, 1960. Together, they built a home near Englevale, ND and raised 5 children, and Millie was in heaven. She loved babies and being a farm wife. Her home usually included extra nieces and nephews and there was always room for more at the kitchen table. The more the merrier! She had a special place in her heart for foreign exchange student Patricia Forjaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Over the years, Jim & Millie hosted 20 young farmers who were part of an international ag exchange program. She was so happy to hear from them over the years and was able to attend several of their weddings in Europe and Australia.

Millie never saw a baby she didn’t want to hold or a dog she didn’t want to pet. The birth of her grandchildren gave her more babies to love and she didn’t miss a school or dance performance. She was a giver to her core; generosity was her way of life. Her home was a happy, carefree place and she encouraged her children in piano lessons, playing an instrument, and passed along her love of reading and travel. When she was expecting her 5th child, she decided to start jogging. For 52 years, she was out morning and evening, 365 days a year, even in the rain and snow. We estimate she ran the circumference of the Earth one-and-a-half times. For years, Millie would dance around the kitchen with a broom. She finally convinced Jim to take dance lessons and they were off; Jim was a natural. They loved getting on the dance floor at the Sons of Norway in Fargo and other dance halls and captured everyone’s eye as they moved so well together. When Jim retired from farming, Millie expressed interest in travel. They signed up for a cruise and over the years went on 2 dozen cruises all over the world including Hong Kong, Australia, Europe, Norway, and Central America.

Her faith was strong. She was active in the Englevale Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and its ladies’ groups (just days before she died, she called around to arrange food for great-niece Andrea’s funeral). She religiously tended God’s gifts from the orchard and garden, freezing, pickling, and canning -- sometimes until 2 AM! Millie also helped bring God’s children into the world at the Lisbon and Valley City hospitals.

Millie died after a sudden illness on Sunday, August 29. She is survived by her husband of almost 61 years, James Dick; her children Janna Diggs, Suzanne (Mike) Spiese, Gaylen (Teresa) Dick, Wendi Dick, and Benjamin (Katherine) Dick; grandchildren Marissa Diggs, Abigail (Deondre) Smiles, Carley Spiese (Ethan Frank), Julia (Trace) Beethe, Michael Spiese, Alex and Brianna Dick, Kyle and Ryan Koenig, Beau (Maribeth), Bailey, and Ryder Goolsbey, and Evan and Tabitha Dick; sister Helen (Orville) Schultz; brother-in-law Gerald (Shelby) Dick; sisters-in-law Bernice Hallquist Dick, Bonnie Namtvedt, Lori Dick, and Barbara Haugen; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Millie was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law Lawrence and Ruby Dick; sisters-in-law Beverly Hanson, Dorothy Dick, and Mary Jo Urseth; brothers-in-law Harold and Larry Dick, Cliff Hanson, and Cliff Urseth; and nephews Roger Hanson and Mark and Steve Schultz.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 PM on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, ND, with a prayer service at 6 PM. Memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 5, 2021 at 2 PM at Good Shepherd Lutheran, Englevale, ND.

Leona Lucille Hendrickson - November 05, 1925 - January 27, 2021

Departed: 01/27/2021 (Enderlin)

Obituary Preview: LEONA ZDEB HENDRICKSON NOVEMBER 5th 1925 – JANUARY 27th 2021

On a farm near Pingree, ND, on November 5th 1925, a daughter was born to Joseph and Elna (Carlson) Zdeb. This was a change for them after parenting four sons. Leona Brown, a friend of the family and a midwife, was present at the birth and proved to be the namesake for little Leona Zdeb. Brother Joe, Jr. is responsible for pinning the life long nickname “SIS” on his little sister.

The Zdeb family moved to Valley City, ND, when Leona was two years old. She attended the Training School there through the fifth grade and then enjoyed country life along with the rest of the family dozen when they relocated on a farm south of Valley City.

Eighth grade graduation for Leona was from the King School. This was a county affair and held at Chautauqua Park in Valley City. After attending nearly, a year of high school at St. Catherine’s in Valley City, Leona returned to the farm where she was helpful and comfortable.

On June 30th 1943, Leona was united in marriage with James Albert Hendrickson from Eastedge, ND. Three children were born to them: Janice Leona, James LeRoy and David Wayne. The Hendrickson family farmed in Barnes County near Pillsbury and Oriska before purchasing three quarters of land from Grandpa Thill and Grandma Bertha Hendrickson in 1952. Later they bought two quarters, also in the Nome, Fingal area from Nels and Helga Mahlum. These five quarters of land, along with live stock, kept the family well occupied. Yes, there were many satisfying rewards from tilling the soil and caring for the animals.

Because of a demand for teachers and some very lean years on the farm, Leona attended the Fingal High School for one year and passed the GED test for her high school diploma. She then acquired a two-year teaching certificate from Valley City State College in 1963. Leona then commuted to Marion, ND, to teach elementary school for eight and one-half years. Those were enjoyable years for Leona, and the money earned was put to good use, needless to say.

When Jan, Jim Jr, and Dave were grown and gone from the “nest”, Leona became more involved with the farming again. Yet she accomplished her personal goal by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree from Valley City State College in 1975.

Due to unhappy circ*mstances Leona kept her equity but parted from the family farm near Nome in 1979. She resided in Buffalo and Fargo until she moved to Maryhill Manor in Enderlin where she passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

Leona had numerous interests and hobbies: stitchery, photography, Scrabble, boating, biking, reading, ballooning, playing cards and of course some Bingo.

The closeness of the Zdeb family has been very important and gratifying to Leona.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Janice Van De Kerckhove of Fargo, her son, David Hendrickson of Rapid City, four grandchildren, Steve Langemo of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Brandi Hendrickson of Glenwood, Iowa, David and Tyler Hendrickson of Boise, Idaho. and four great grandchildren.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, three sisters, James A. Hendrickson, and her son, James L. Hendrickson.

Departed: 01/02/2021 (Enderlin)

Obituary Preview: Pamela Muriel Stamnes, formerly of Enderlin ND, passed away peacefully at the Villa Maria in Fargo ND on January 2, 2021.

Pam was born on December 11, 1937 in Witney, England to Ernest and Ida Pizzie. While living in Bampton England she met and later married Ernest W Stamnes Jr while he was serving in the US Air Force. For the next several years they travelled all over Europe, adopting 2 boys, Ronald and later Shaun, while stationed in Germany. Following Ernest’s service time they settled on the family farm near Buttzville ND to raise their family.

Pam loved North Dakota the wide open prairie and ‘big skies” as well as spending time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. After their sons left home, Pam and Ernest moved into Lisbon and later to Enderlin until Ernest’s death in 2019.

Pamela loved spiritual things and she was devoted to Jehovah God, a fact borne out by her favorite scripture Micah 4:5. Pam appreciated the hope the bible holds out to all mankind of the resurrection to a paradise on earth under God’s Kingdom that Jehovah God has promised and Jesus Christ preached about and she took every chance she could to tell people of these truths.

Pamela is survived by her sons Ronald (Kali) of Chugiak AK; Shaun (Deanne) of Green Bay, WI; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; Sister-in-law Sylvia (Stamnes) Fineberg of Minneapolis, many nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends.

Pamela was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Barbara and brother-in-law Gordon Ainsworth of Bampton England and her devoted husband of 64 years, Ernest.

Pamela’s family would like to thank the staff, most notably her case manager Sam, at Villa Maria in Fargo for all their love and care over the past year and the doctors, nurses and staff, especially Mary, of Sanford Outpatient Dialysis for your exceptional care over the past several years.

Jeanette Helen Hendricks - August 25, 1924 - November 12, 2020

Departed: 11/12/2020 (Enderlin)

Obituary Preview: JEANETTE HELEN HENDRICKS passed peacefully in her sleep on November 12, 2020 in Enderlin North Dakota. She was born on August 25, 1924 in Northland Township near Fort Ransom, North Dakota to Martin and Helen Libak. Jeanette attended country school and graduated from Fort Ransom High School. She married Erling (Bud) Hendricks on May 25, 1946. In November of 1946 they had one son, Jon Edward. From 1948-1949 they owned and operated a grocery store in Fort Ransom. They moved to Seattle, Washington where she worked in the insurance industry for 25 years. In 1980 Jeanette and Bud moved back to North Dakota where they owned and operated Bud’s Saloon in Kathryn. In 1985, they retired in Enderlin. They belonged to First Lutheran Church in Enderlin where Jeanette was active in circles. She was widowed in 1989.

In Enderlin she had a large yard which she loved decorating with flowers; Peonies were one of her favorites. Jeanette enjoyed antiquing, crafting, and going to auctions. She spent much of her time sewing dolls and quilts. Much of her handmade goods were sold during Sheyenne Valley Arts and Crafts Festival but each year a few nieces and nephews received a lot of Aunt Jeanette’s love in those handmade gifts.

Jeanette lived a long life and in good health. Her last few years she lived at Maryhill Manor as her eyes and ears were failing her. She received wonderful care from the staff there and we thank them for all they did.

She is survived by her sister, Janice (Pat) Eng, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by son, Jon Edward Hendricks, husband, Erling Oswald Hendricks, parents, Martin and Helen Libak, siblings, Bernice (Willard) Larson, Harriet (Harold) Henrikson, Adeline (Jerry) Packard, Marvin (Elsa) Libak, Howard Libak, Jerome Libak and baby Libak, and several nieces and nephews.

She is remembered as a “survivor” having lived through the Great Depression, tuberculosis, running the household and businesses in Bud’s absence, maintaining a house and yard for 20+ years as a widow, and outliving much of her family and most of her friends. It was a combination of stubbornness and her faith in God that got her through. We pray she had more joys than trials.

There will be no service at this time. We hope to gather safely in the spring of 2021 to remember one of the Greatest Generation.

Jeanette had expressed that should there be any assets left when she died that they should be distributed between the church she last attended and the family cemetery. If you wish to give in her memory, these are the organizations you should give to: (First Lutheran Church,326 Bluff St. Enderlin, ND 58027) or Preston Cemetery Fund Inc. C/O Myron Hammer, 12053 57 St SE Kathryn, ND 58049). (Armstrong Funeral Home, Enderlin, ND)

Departed: 04/30/2020 (Enderlin)

Obituary Preview: Myron DeVerne Morris

Born: February 8, 1934 in rural Kensal, ND to John Harold and Ester Selma Morris (Hermanson).

Died: April 30, 2020 in Enderlin, ND.

Graduated high school from Chaffee in 1952.

1952-1953 farm.

Joined the services for a 2-year period between 1-19-1954 to 1-18-1956. Stationed at various facilities across the States from Fort Riley Kansas to Fort Ord California and a majority of his time at Fort Hood Texas, mastering his skill and certifying in Combat Command Sniper School, receiving his diploma, and awarded the National Defense Service Medal for the 701st Armored Infantry Battalion. Myron also served in the major training exercises, post WW2, in Louisiana with Operation Sage Brush in late 1955 as part of the highly noted 1st Armored Division of the Armed Services 9th Field Army (Provisional). He would finish his service with an honorable discharge in early 1956.

Myron worked road construction for a few years as a heavy machinery operator before returning to the family farm to settle there for his remaining days working the farm alongside his brother Jack, raising small and large grains, and working a small cattle operation.

Myron loved to play pool and became quite good competing in many tournaments around the area receiving several notable trophies over the years. Myron’s second love came for the pull tab machine. If he wasn’t hustling at pool he was pulling tabs. There likely wasn’t a rhyme or reason to the madness, a single scientific method, or any supporting theory he had, it was probably more of just plain luck, but seemed to have that machine figured out and he pulled some good tabs from those machines over the years! He certainly loved playing the tabs and a lot of people will remember him for that. It isn’t always about winning. He loved doing it and it made him happy.

Myron retired at the farm where he enjoyed his time walking the cow paths in the pasture watching the cows. And he never went anywhere without his little radio in his pocket so he could listen to the Minnesota Twins! He loved baseball, even if they weren’t winning.

In January 2019 Myron fell ill and sadly had to move out of the farm he loved so much and spent nearly his entire life on. Myron resided at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin, ND for the remainder of his days battling health issues where his body finally succumbed and gave his last breath. Myron will be remembered by his surrounding neighbors, friends and family for a long time to come.

FAQs

What's the difference between obituary and eulogy? ›

Editor Carol DeChant explains, "Obituaries are usually mini-biographies, focused on what a person did, but the eulogy is much deeper, more about who the person was... It's meant for the select group of people who knew and cared for that person, or who care for the survivors."

What is the difference between a tribute and a eulogy? ›

A Eulogy is an account of the person's life story. A Tribute is a reflection of your interaction with the person at a specific time or place. It is an honour to be asked to deliver either a eulogy or a tribute. A eulogy is a speech given at a funeral or memorial service honouring the deceased.

What is a good example of a eulogy? ›

Example eulogy:

My dad was my hero. No matter how busy things got, he always made time for the people he cared about, and showed us that family always comes first – no matter what. Everyone who knew him knew how proud he was of the people he loved, of his dog, Buddy, and of his car… of course.

What is the format of a eulogy? ›

Eulogies can take many forms. Some people who deliver a eulogy choose to open with a poem, a religious reading, or a personal anecdote, while others might choose to use these elements as a closing thought. Regardless of which approach you choose, a reliable structure involves three parts: a beginning, middle, and end.

What should you not say in an obituary? ›

There may be personal details which will only be told to the immediate family and friends. You should also not say hurtful or damaging things about the person that died, even though they are gone. These words could prove to be hurtful to other family members.

How long should a eulogy be at a funeral? ›

Commonly, eulogies are around three to seven minutes long, but this can vary. Funerals tend to take 45 minutes, so around this length is standard. When you've written your eulogy, try practising it out loud, as this can take longer than reading it in your head.

Who should give a eulogy at a funeral? ›

The eulogy itself is typically given by a close family member, friend or a minister. There's no reason why two people cannot deliver the eulogy, or in some cases, it may be more appropriate to open the eulogies to all attendees.

Does every funeral have a eulogy? ›

Respect the Deceased Family's Wishes

The family should be the ones who decide how they want the service to play out. Some families are open to having multiple eulogies, while others only have one or two people speaking. Others might not have a eulogy at all.

Can an obituary be a eulogy? ›

Unlike an obituary, a eulogy is usually a spoken remembrance in honor of the deceased. It can cover an array of topics but usually includes a personal story, often lighthearted, that helps portray their life.
