Eric Akio Adachi - October 25, 1962 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (San Diego)

Obituary Preview: We are deeply saddened to share with you the passing of our beloved Eric Akio Adachi, 61, of Chula Vista, who left his earthly body too soon, on March 23, 2024.

Eric was a ray of sunshine to those who knew him. He was constantly full of determination, ambition, dreams, and was never afraid to try new experiences. Eric always loved to seek new thrills. His willingness to always seek, to strive, and to endlessly improve was a source of inspiration for many throughout his life.

Even as a child, Eric loved to live to the fullest. Young Eric loved his comic books, skateboard, sports and being outdoors. He was also a good student, and graduated from Morse High School, San Diego, CA., with high honors.

Somewhere along the way Eric became fascinated with economics and went on to pursue his degree at the University of California, San Diego. He achieved his goal and graduated with a B.A. in Economics on June 15, 1985. In college he also showcased his love (and skill) for fencing and competed in many tournaments.

After college, Eric worked as a financial analyst where he excelled, always doing the extra work and taking the initiative to stay informed and educated in an ever-changing, sometimes volatile, career. However, when he wasn’t sifting through numbers and trends, Eric stayed true to his love of adventure. From golfing to skydiving, from snow tubing with the kids to climbing Mt. Whitney, from his love of traveling to his love of fine wines; he wanted to experience it all. Besides being so much fun to be around, Eric will, most of all, be remembered for his compassion and unwavering ability to care for others. He was always ready, and willing, to take the shirt off his back for his friends and family–often putting others' needs before his own. He will be deeply missed and forever a part of our hearts. As Eric was a huge Jimmy Buffet fan, we find it fitting to leave you with one of his famous quotes: “Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way” -Jimmy Buffet

Ivory Charles Shepherd - June 27, 1948 - January 23, 2024

Departed: 01/23/2024 (San Diego)

Obituary Preview: Ivory Charles Shepherd, born June 27, 1948, was raised in the home of Leander and Elizabeth Shepherd, along with many other extended family “siblings” in Beaumont, Texas. This welcoming home was full of children, pets, and lots of good food, but mostly lots of love. Trips to Louisiana were frequent to visit many other extended family members whose homes were also full of love and food. Ivory Charles graduated from Hebert High School in Beaumont in 1968, where he was in the band, played tennis and made lifelong friendships.

Ivory Charles joined the US Navy and served from 1970-1974. He was trained as a Hospital Corpsman on a large aircraft carrier. This interest in the medical field remained with him the rest of his life. Ivory attended Lamar University in Beaumont then moved to Houston, where he worked as a draftsman but was always drawn to the medical field. He met a group of friends who worked at a psychiatric hospital and in 1983 he met Barry, the love of his life.

Barry and Ivory took off for San Diego in 1986 where they lived together the next 38 years. After they settled in and bought their first home, Ivory Charles attended nursing school, received his RN degree and began work as an emergency room nurse in one of San Diego’s largest hospitals. It wasn’t a job to him; a nurse was just who he was. Barry and Ivory developed a large group of dear friends in San Diego and hosted many pool parties at their home where folks came for Ivory’s barbecued chicken and ribs. Their home was always with at least one dog. It was often observed that babies and puppies seemed to love Ivory Charles. Although no children of their own, one young man came to think of Ivory and Barry as his “pops” and that relationship has sustained for 33 years. Ivory Charles suffered a major stroke in 1995, which sadly ended his nursing career. But he worked hard to rehabilitate and refocused his life, taking sewing and cooking classes.

Barry and Ivory legally married in 2013 at their home surrounded by friends. Health issues returned and Ivory Charles used a wheelchair the last 8 years of his life. This did not slow him down until the last year in which further complications left him bedridden. Thanks to Barry and Hospice services, Ivory was able to remain at home and passed peacefully on January 23rd with Barry and his current dog Quenby at his side. Ivory Charles is survived by Barry Fox, Pepe Robles, nieces Mary Shepherd, Connie Swanson, and Pam Landry, nephew Anthony Jessie and many other great nephews, nieces, cousins and lifelong friends.

William Arthur Obrist - June 22, 1941 - October 26, 2023

Departed: 10/26/2023 (San Diego)

Obituary Preview: William "Bill" Arthur Obrist was born on June 22, 1941 and died on October 26, 2023 of natural causes.

A lover of speed and precision, Bill found great enjoyment in riding motorcycles and driving fast cars. He once purchased a 1967 fire-engine-red GTO, which was a prized possession. Bill owned and maintained a variety of sport cars, motorcycles and motor homes before settling on the comfort of Cadillacs in later years. His adeptness at fixing and tinkering with vehicles became a useful skill in his future career and in life. In addition to his fast toys he enjoyed bowling, billiards and darts, all of which he played competitively. And he could always be counted on to play a few hours of cribbage upon request, especially with family.

His early years were spent in Northern NY, first in Adams Center where he attended elementary and middle schools, then in Watertown where he graduated high school. Bill worked for the company his Dad founded, the Northern Glass Company, learning the glassier trade, primarily during the summers.

Bill served in the United States Army during the early and tumultuous years of the Vietnam War, earning a combat ribbon and an honorable discharge. After he returned from Vietnam, Bill was hired by The Gleason Corporation in Rochester. He worked as a troubleshooter, brought in to businesses to repair their equipment onsite. In his career with Gleason he worked in Europe and once in Asia, but most of his time was spent in Detroit. For several years he was sent weekly to Detroit to work in the automotive plants of the big three car manufactures.

At age 35 he retired, bought a motorhome and travelled extensively around the country, including extended stays in Florida with his parents and in Alaska with his brother and family. He ended up in San Diego, liking it so well that he decided to live there permanently. From there he continued to travel, visiting family and friends often. He could always be counted on to be present at family gatherings, no matter where they were held. Bill’s passion for driving accrued him well over a million miles in his lifetime.

It was in San Diego that he encountered the owner of a small glass company, C and C Glass. After striking up a friendship, Bill came out of retirement to work with him for many years. Bill played a pivotal role in building the company, demonstrating the skills he learned working for his dad’s company in his youth. It was during this time that he met and married Sandra, his wife of 24 years. Sandra had a passion for cats which led them to buy a home and initially adopt two. Over the years they rescued and housed more than a dozen stray felines. Bill and Sandra became ardent supporters of charities dedicated to the ethical treatment of animals and faithful supporters of no-kill shelters, humane societies and other animal causes.

As life unfolded, Bill faced health challenges stemming from the Vietnam war, Agent Orange exposure, PTSD, and congestive heart failure. Sandra assumed the role of primary caregiver. Upon her sudden passing in 2022, Bill's journey continued with the compassionate support of caregivers from Right at Home and later Everest Hospice, allowing him to remain in the home he shared with Sandra.

Bill is survived by his four siblings, Michael Obrist, TN, Kathy Colucci, NY, Herman Obrist, AZ and Mary Gregson, AZ and their spouses and children.

A celebration of Bill's life is being arranged at Miramar veteran’s cemetery with military honors.

Mark Ward Saltus-Thordin - November 11, 1959 - August 02, 2023

Departed: 08/02/2023 (San Diego)

Obituary Preview: The world lost a gregarious, generous, dynamic, and capable soul with the passing of Mark Ward Saltus-Thordin on August 2 in San Diego, California, from complications related to cancer treatment.

Mark led an adventurous life full of warmth and humor, well-reflected by his infamous purple camo pants (“Wait - you can see me?”). The youngest of three, Mark spent his early years in Arlington, Virginia. He lived on Greenbriar Street - then a dirt road across from Wakefield High School - and the Saltus kids were always up and down the block playing with other neighborhood kids until sundown. They rode their bikes around and made primitive skateboards by disassembling metal skates and nailing them to boards. Once his sister bet him $20 to swim across a scummy pond when they were all dressed up at a country wedding. Of course, he jumped right in. As you can imagine, it took some time to actually collect from his sister and get out of the doghouse with mom.

After the premature death of their father, the Saltus family moved to Denver, Colorado. Mark attended Moore School and graduated from Denver East High School. Eager to get on with real life adventures, Mark went straight from high school into the oil patch, working as an oil rig roughneck in Rawlins, Wyoming. Here Mark began to collect his many life stories, forever after told with continuous embellishment. Mark’s oil career took him to work on Sedco oil rigs offshore from Angola. He worked three weeks on and three weeks off with free airfare to anywhere in the world. There are undoubtedly friends and acquaintances scattered worldwide from this period of his life. He made good money and was very generous with it. He bought a Cessna 172 and learned to fly. On one practice flight, he took his big brother out for touch-and-go landings out east of Denver. A strong crosswind at the target airport made for some white-knuckle landing attempts. His brother’s stomach took weeks to recover. After leaving the oil field, Mark dabbled in aircraft sales, forming his own company, Aerie Aviation, which he operated out of his brother’s attic for a time.

Mark met his first wife, Leslie, in Colorado. They married in Central City and Mark adopted Leslie’s daughter Brittany. After a job opportunity took them to Nebraska, they had two additional children together, Aubrey and Celsea. Here, Mark ran a construction company specializing in grain handling solutions for farmers throughout Nebraska. It is also where he developed his refined taste for sweet corn. After his marriage ended, Mark moved to California by way of New Mexico. He worked with a research group at Los Alamos National Laboratory that was experimenting with cosmic rays to detect and prevent the smuggling of nuclear weapons, and successfully exported the technology to San Diego-based Decision Sciences. He was one of their earliest employees and spent 14 years with the company. He became key to deployment and construction of the systems, both in San Diego and in various locations around the world. Mark was passionate about trying to improve the systems, and loved talking physics with the scientists. Mark maintained a Wall of Shame, which was a piece of paper on his office wall containing a compilation of his thoughts, notions, and observations over the years. It contained wisdom such as “Motion does not equal progress,” “Better is the enemy of good enough,” and “It is hard to drive looking through a microscope.”

In New Mexico, he relished the endless opportunities for outdoor exploration, especially where hot springs were involved. One of his conundrums in life was that he really, really liked hot springs but observed that those who frequented them tended to be a little nutty. He still went whenever the opportunity presented itself.

In San Diego, he decided he needed to fulfill a lifelong dream of climbing the rigging of a tall ship, so he signed up to volunteer at the city’s maritime museum. On his first day, he met his second wife, Elisabeth. He gave her the impression that she would be an excellent tour guide as she grew up in the area, but she soon found out in his short time there he had already discovered places she didn’t even know existed. With a shared love of the outdoors and travel, they adventured together, road-tripping, camping in the desert, exploring new hiking trails, and visiting friends, family, and new places across the world.

Mark had a special knack for making strangers into friends — often in an instant. Small gatherings in his and Elisabeth’s open garage quickly morphed into vibrant parties, as Mark invited neighbors and passers-by to join in the fun. Meeting folks on a trail while hiking could lead to extensive conversation, leaving those lucky enough to encounter him with indelible impressions. His sense of humor was legendary — Mark was fond of “dad jokes” and shaggy-dog stories, and enjoyed nothing more than recounting them for a new and unsuspecting audience. He doted on his wife, beamed about his children and grandchildren, and often reflected aloud on how fortunate he was in life.

Mark touched many lives. He had an incredible gift for working with people and fixing difficult situations, and was the first to volunteer for hard work that helped others. His pragmatism and intelligence were brought to bear on a wide variety of efforts. He skipped college and graduate school but earned a “field PhD” through his tenacious approach to understanding and solving complex problems. In the oil field, he learned to speak Spanish and Portuguese to better communicate with co-workers. His various pursuits took him to many corners of the world, and he always made an effort to learn at least a few phrases in the local language.

Mark was generous with his time and skills, and showed care for others through helping, fixing, building, and teaching. Wherever someone jumps up to help a friend with a big project, takes a risk and goes all out, or steps in to solve a complex problem, Mark’s spirit is there. He is tremendously missed and left us way too soon.

Mark was preceded in death by his father David, mother Kay, and sister Kim. He is survived by his wife Elisabeth; daughters Brittany, Aubrey, and Celsea; grandchildren Eden, Ever, Eisley, Scout, and Henry; brother Rick; nieces Shelby and Sierra; stepfather Michael; as well as many, many friends and colleagues from around the world.

Kevin Eric Castanien - December 01, 1961 - July 06, 2023

Departed: 07/06/2023 (San Diego)

Obituary Preview: Kevin Eric Castanien, age 61, passed away in San Diego, California on Thursday, July 6, 2023 surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kevin graduated from Bay Village High School, Ohio and The Ohio State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later completed his Masters in Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University. He truly enjoyed engineering—solving problems and creating new solutions—and worked for 36 years leading engineering teams and working design and testing programs in support of the Department of Defense.

Kevin leaves behind his wife and soulmate of fifteen years, Bahar Gursel. Whether traveling to places all over the world, spending time with their many friends, or enjoying the lovely San Diego weather and great outdoors, they loved being together and living life to the fullest.

To his daughter, Samantha (Sam) Castanien, Kevin was not only the greatest father in the world, but an everyday hero. He was beloved by both her and her husband, Alex Beckerman. Kevin was very proud of Sam for graduating from the US Air Force Academy and completing her law degree to become a Judge Advocate General.

Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Kevin loved him! His bright smile sparkled in his eyes, while his quick humor made him a joy to be around. He was introverted when meeting new people, but quickly became interestingly outspoken once he became familiar with them. His wit, dry sense of humor, and intelligence allowed him to carry on a wide variety of conversations about politics and current events. He enjoyed challenging others to test their positions—and almost always in the name of good fun. In that vein, he also loved playing pranks on his close friends. Kevin genuinely loved being with his family and friends, and he gifted them all with laughter and fun everywhere he went.

Kevin loved soccer, which he played from childhood to nearly the end of his life. He was a huge fan of professional soccer and followed many of the European teams. He never failed to show his support for soccer by wearing team jerseys whenever he could. In June he, Bahar, and some of their friends traveled to Turkey to watch Manchester City beat Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League Final. It was a bucket-list item for Kevin, and he was so happy to share it with Bahar and their friends.

Kevin loved to laugh, and he never let anyone stop him from doing what made him happy. He enjoyed watching Ted Lasso and the Big Bang Theory. His other interests besides soccer were playing poker, attending the opera and the Old Globe Theater, and playing board, card, and video games. He and Samantha shared a love for World of Warcraft, which kept them together in cyberspace even when they were thousands of miles apart.

Kevin is survived by his parents, James and Beverly Castanien; his brother, Christian Castanien and his wife, Joan; his sister, Kimberly Castanien and her husband, Dave; his uncle, Roger Castanien, and aunt, Rosemary (Pinkie) Castanien, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews—and of course, his daughter, Sam, and wife, Bahar.

A celebration of Kevin’s life will be arranged privately. Anyone wishing to offer a gift should consider a donation to either the National Coalition Against Censorship (https://ncac.org/) or the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego (https://wish.org/sandiego).

Monique Vivien Griego - May 06, 1982 - May 15, 2023

Departed: 05/15/2023 (San Diego)

Obituary Preview: It is with indescribable sadness that we announce the passing of Monique Vivien Griego, age 41, a loving daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend.

Monique was born on May 6,1982 in Flagstaff Arizona. She grew up in Mesa, Arizona where she attended Catholic elementary school, Mesa Junior High School, graduated from Mesa High School and then earned a Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from Arizona State University (ASU), in Tempe, AZ. While at ASU, she was awarded a Hearst Award, which is a Pulitzer Prize of College Journalism. After college she worked for 16 years as an anchor and reporter for various television stations, KTSM Channel 9 in El Paso, WJZ Channel 13 in Baltimore, KPNX Channel 12 in Phoenix and KFMB Channel 8 in San Diego.

In 2015, while working for News Channel 12 in Phoenix, She was announced as an Emmy Award Winner for one of her Feature Stories. She accomplished so much in her short life.

One of Monique's greatest loves were her dogs, Rocco and Runt. She considered them as her kids and loved them unconditionally. She was also a staunch advocate for Dog Rescue Organizations. No matter what TV station she worked for, she would use her broadcasts to help find homes for rescued dogs. Around the newsrooms, she became known as the Dog Reporter.

Monique also had an eclectic sense of style. She would put together an outfit that might look weird on someone else but on her, it looked great. We will remember her infamous black and white checkered Van tennis shoes and the multitude of spiked heels that she wore. She was creative, adventurous and loved to travel. She liked everything vintage and was always looking for a good estate sale. While living in San Diego, she took up painting, gardening and surfing.

Monique loved her family and friends. She voiced it often, and made it very clear to them that she loved them. She had a knack for making everybody feel special to her because they were. She loved giving little gifts to people because she knew it would make them feel good. Everyone who knew her can attest to the fact that once a friend, you became her friend for life.

She passed away in the comfort of her home, encircled in love and prayer by all of her children and grandchildren.

She will be remembered as a mother for the unconditional love she gave us all, her unwavering belief that all dreams are possible, and her generousity that knew no bounds. She would do anything for her children and her grandkids. No request, no matter how unreasonable, inconvienant, or at times bordering illegal… (toilet papering at 2am, or teaching us to drive at age 12…) was denied. In the seldom times she initially said no, everyone knew they could always negotiate for their desired outcome. She had a heart of gold and gave without measure or expectation of an equal return. She loved for love’s sake and taught us all the regenerative power of laughter. Even in the saddest of times, she’d find one shining pearl of humor.

Bamba will also be remembered for her radiant beauty and grace as a competitive ballroom dancer. In her early 20s, Bamba and her partner elegantly waltzed their way into first place on The Lawrence Welk Show’s televised dance competition. Throughout her life, she never ceased to light up a room with her presence on a dance floor.

As an animal lover, Bamba showed us how to love and care for all of God’s creatures. In her younger years, she loved to ride bareback on her favorite horse, Moon. She continued to rescue and care for animals throughout her life.

She is preceded in death by: her mother and father, Hazel and Charles King; and three siblings, Kathleen Wright, Billie Lou Moses, and Gary King. She is survived by: two siblings, Marie Allison and Terri King; three children, Gary Johnson, Greg Johnson, and Gina Johnson; and nine grandchildren, Gary Johnson, Evita Johnson, Dylan Johnson, Arielle Gilardi, Harold Johnson, Austin Cunniff, Ireland Cunniff, David Johnson, and Joseph Johnson.

A service of remembrance will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Saturday, December 17th at 10:00am. 1140 Ximeno Ave Long Beach, CA 90804

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of someone's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It serves to inform the community of the person's passing and to outline their life achievements, family member relationships, and details regarding funeral services or memorials.

How does an obitory differ from a death notice?

A death notice is a more straightforward, shorter announcement of a person's death, typically providing fewer details than an obituary. It may only include basic information such as the person's name, age, and date of death, as well as service times and locations.

Who usually writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by family members or closed friends, sometimes with the assistance of a funeral home. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning.

What key details should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of death, and a brief summary of their life, including professional and personal achievements, interests, and family connections. It also often details funeral or memorial service information.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no set length for an obituary; it can range from a brief announcement to a lengthy tribute. The length may be influenced by the publishing medium's space constraints or the family's preference.

Can an obituary include a photo?

Yes, a photo can be included in an obituary. It is common to use a recent photograph or a picture that meaningfully represents the individual's life.

What if I don't want to publish details about the funeral?

Publication of funeral details in an obituary is optional. Families may choose to keep these details private or only share them with selected individuals for various reasons, including privacy or security concerns.

How can an obituary be personalized?

An obituary can be personalized by sharing anecdotes, accomplishments, hobbies, passions, or any attributes that uniquely depict the deceased’s character. Including favorite quotes, poetry, or sayings can also add a personal touch.

What is the purpose of including survivor and predeceased information?

Including survivor and predeceased information helps to acknowledge the deceased's family connections and can provide a sense of the legacy they leave behind. It is also useful for genealogical records.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely, depending primarily on the publication and its pricing structure. Some may charge by word count, column inch, or offer a flat rate. Online obituaries can sometimes be published for free or at a lower cost.

Are there any common phrases or terms used in obituaries?

Common phrases in obituaries include "passed away," "surrounded by loved ones," "in loving memory," "celebration of life," and references to the individual "joining" predeceased family members.

Can an obituary be published after the funeral services?

While it is customary to publish an obituary before funeral services take place, an obituary can be published anytime after death, even after the services have occurred.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

You should avoid including overly personal or sensitive information that could compromise the family’s privacy or security, such as home addresses, financial information, or details that would be uncomfortable for the family.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

It is not necessary to hire a professional; however, some families choose to do so to ensure the obituary is well-written and to alleviate the burden during a time of grief. Funeral homes often offer obituary writing services as well.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Each newspaper or online platform has its own process for submitting obituaries. Generally, you will need to contact the publication to get submission guidelines, deadlines, and costs. They typically require verification of death through a funeral home or death certificate.

Can an online obituary be a better choice than a newspaper obituary?

An online obituary might be a better choice for reaching a widespread audience, especially if the deceased has friends and family spread across various locations. Additionally, online obituaries often allow longer length and the inclusion of photos and video without the per-line cost associated with print obituaries.

Sharing an obituary on social media is a matter of personal choice. It can be an effective way to inform a broad network of the death quickly. However, it is important to ensure that all immediate family members have been notified before it is shared publicly.

Should condolences be included in an obituary?

While it is not typical to include condolences in an obituary, family and friends often leave condolences in online guest books or in responses to social media posts regarding the obituary.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes, families often request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a specified charity that was important to the deceased or relevant to the cause of their death.

How can I preserve an obituary for future generations?

To preserve an obituary, you might keep hard copies from the publication, save digital copies, include the obituary in family scrapbooks, or upload it to genealogical websites. Some online memorial sites also keep records indefinitely.

What should be done if there is an error in an obituary?

If an error is found in an obituary, contact the publication as soon as possible to correct the information. Most publications are willing to correct minor errors at no additional cost.
