Nagato is a character that possesses one of the most powerful abilities in the entire Naruto universe. With such a small number of Rinnegan users the power remains quite mysterious making many fans extremely interested in it. So how did Nagato get his Rinnegan?
Nagato got the Rinnegan without his knowledge when Uchiha Madara implanted his Rinnegan into him at a young age. Rinnegan was implanted into a young Nagato by Madara before he was supposed to die since he deemed him to be a worthy carrier for the power until he was able to return.

Was Nagato Born With Rinnegan?
Rinnegan is one of the Three Great Dōjutsu and it is the most exalted eye amongst the three. Since it is a skill one can not be born with it but has to unlock the ability to use it (sort of).
Although it is possible to be born with it, this is a very unlikely circ*mstance. In order for a kid to be born with Rinnegan, their DNA must be completely aligned. It would essentially be a natural occurrence, a mutation.
Madara spent decades nurturing Senju and Uchiha DNA to produce a pair utilizing science, which is the only reason a Rinnegan existed beyond the period of the Sage of Six Paths. It’s the Naruto version of genetic engineering.
The first person we know of that got Rinnegan is Hagoromo Otsutsuki. He got his Rinnegan at the same time as he got his Mangeky Sharingan, which he got after gravely killing his brother.
Hagoromo freed the world from the Ten-Tails by using Rinnegan’s strength and creating Ninshu, the forerunner to contemporary ninjutsu.
Hagoromo was venerated as the Sage of Six Paths for his contributions to the world, and both he and his eyes rose to mythical status after his death; even when the Rinnegan was subsequently confirmed to exist, some rejected it as a chance mutation.
A new Rinnegan can be awakened by getting Hagoromo’s chakra, either by merging the chakra of his sons, Indra and Asura, to rebuild his ownor by receiving it directly from Hagoromo himself.
Black Zetsu spent ages trying to persuade Indra and Asura’s reincarnations to awaken the Rinnegan, but it wasn’t until the time of Madara Uchiha, Indra’s reincarnate, that he succeeded.
Madara implanted the flesh of Asura’s reincarnate, Hashirama Senju, into his own body, causing a portion of Asura’s chakra to merge with Indra’s.
Madara’s eyes, on the other hand, did not become Rinnegan until decades later, when he was reaching the end of his natural lifespan. This also restored his right eye’s eyesight, which had been damaged due to his previous usage of Izanagi.
How Did Nagato Get The Rinnegan?
Nagato didn’t come into the world with the Rinnegan. Madara implanted the eyes into Nagato while he was a toddler, intending to recover the eyes later. Nagato was seen as a powerful vessel to bear the eyes since he is a member of the Uzumaki clan.
Madara sought to seek an equally powerful Uzumaki clan member to wield the Rinnegan because the last Uchihas living at the time were Sasuke and Itachi. Nagato’s existence in the peaceful Rain Village proved to be an ideal hideaway until Madara returned.
Madara had perfected his plan for achieving peace and then dubbed it the Eye of the Moon Plan, continuing to refer to it as such over the years.
Madara realized as years passed that he wouldn’t be able to fulfill his objectives in the time he had left. To avoid his Rinnegan getting lost he decided to implant them in a young boy belonging to the Uchiha clan name Nagato.
Without the boy’s knowledge, he implanted his Rinnegan into him, intending for Nagato to one day utilize the eyes to bring Madara back to life.
Madara, on the other hand, would require an agent to work on his behalf and steer Nagato towards this final aim if Nagato were to do so.
His connection to Demonic Statue keeps him alive and he waited until the help arrived using this time to keep a careful eye on Konoha in order to select a suitable pawn to replace him.
The Rinnegan’s greatest advantage was that it gave Nagato access to all of the Six Paths Techniques: the Deva Path’s gravitational powers; the Animal Path’s menagerie of summons; the Preta Path’s limitless absorptive potential; the Human Path’s control over others’ souls; the Asura Path’s various mechanization options; and access to the King of Hell through the Rinnegan.
Nagato had limited opportunities to employ any of these powers directly due to the constraints of his physical body. When the chance occurred, he could fluidly and instantaneously switch between the many Paths, executing the many talents at a level he couldn’t achieve when employing them via others.
The Outer Path was the one branch of the Six Paths Techniques that Nagato kept to himself. Nagato could call and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path as the Outer Path, create black receivers through which he could channel his chakra, and use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to resurrect the dead as the Outer Path.
How Did Nagato Get Two Rinnegan
The reason why Nagato got two Rinnegan is because of how Madara was able to develop the eye itself. As said earlier, there is no way for a member of the Uzumaki clan to gain the Rinnegan and its abilities, as they specialize in a different aspect of ninjutsu. However, the innate ability of the Uzumaki clan augmented his usage of the Rinnegan. But how was this created?
It all began when Madara was plotting to achieve the Infinite Tsukiyomi, a genjutsu that will cast an illusion to the moon for all people in the world to fall into a dream world of their desire. To achieve that, he needs to have the Ten-Tails in him, as well as two Rinnegan, which can be evolved from a Sharingan.
To make that possible, he needs to have the DNA of a Senju for his eyes to evolve. His longtime friend and rival, Hashirama happen to be the perfect source of the DNA, as his cells are known to have awesome abilities as well. During their battle, he gained a part of Hashirama’s flesh. Madara was defeated by Hashirama. However, Madara had a backup plan where he time-delayed Izanagi to himself to rewrite his death.
When he was hiding in secrecy after leaving a shadow clone on his grave, he applied the Hashirama cells to himself. He even cultivated the cells to grant him more power, as well as nourishment due to the rich vitality of the cells. After several years of waiting, his Sharingan eventually evolved into the Rinnegan. But with his old age, he had to make a backup plan where he must let someone “keep” it.
As a result, he implanted his eyes into Nagato, and will just retrieve them at a certain point in the future. And to make sure that he will be able to get it back, he manipulated Obito Uchiha and gave him an order to find Nagato in the future. Obito was successful in recruiting him after events where Nagato’s friend Yahiko died because of the conflict they got into.
Why Did Madara Give Nagato The Rinnegan?
Rinnegan is one of the most powerful abilities anyone can develop and as we already said, it is believed to be the most powerful out of the three great Dojutsu. This manifests itself with Rinnegan being the only dojutsu able to fully decipher the Sage of Six Paths’ stone tablet.
Rinnegan has very high chakra and ocular power, to the point where an unworthy bearer risks losing themself if one is implanted.
The full power of a Rinnegan can only be unleashed by its original possessor, especially when holding both eyes, although even a single transplanted Rinnegan may offer tremendous strength.
The Rinnegan can see chakra and its flow within the body, as well as other barriers that are ordinarily unseen, but not through smoke bombs. Any jutsu, as well as the five fundamental nature transformations, may be readily mastered with the Rinnegan.
The Rinnegan is the sole way to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and shatter the seal that has been set on it, however, it cannot be summoned using a false reborn Rinnegan.
The dojutsu can also be utilized to lock the Ten-Tails inside one’s body and become the jinchriki of the Ten-Tails.
When a Rinne wielder approaches the moon, the Rinne Sharingan is awakened, and the Infinite Tsukuyomi is cast. Another Rinnegan possessor, in turn, can reject the Infinite Tsukuyomi’s light, and this protection may be extended to others by combining Susanoo and the Rinnegan.
Obviously with such power, anyone who managed to awake this power would feel reluctant to let it go. The same thing happened to Madara. He managed to awake Rinnegan, but it only surfaced years later when he was close to dying.
This made him determined to preserve it, which is why he decided to transfer it to a suitable carrier to preserve it until he was able to return and carry out his plan and Nagato was a perfect person to keep it in his mind.
Why Didn’t Nagato Give Naruto The Rinnegan?
Why didn’t Nagato give Naruto his Rinnegan when he knew he was going to die soon? In episodes 172-175, he is seen to be completely aware of his death. Nagato could have easily implanted his eyes into Naruto and
Naruto would have been almost twice as powerful as Nagato and the Six Pains combined if the Rinnegan wasn’t a curse but rather a source of immense strength.
This prompts many to wonder why didn’t Nagato share it with Naruto. Although the series doesn’t touch on this option at all there are a few clues that could help us find the answer to this question.
The simple answer is that it would not fit with his character. Naruto would most likely decline the offer to take over Nagato’s Rinnegan since he never displayed any greed towards getting more power.
Another thing to consider is the fact that no one would be able to train Naruto in this ability hence he wouldn’t have any use out of it and Nagato’s Rinnegan would go to waste.
