Description

English: Plate/chart in colour showing uniforms, officer rank insignia, enlisted rate insignia, badges, awards, decorations, etc. of the United States Navy, the US Marine Corps, etc. during the Second World War. Illustrations originally from the National Geographic Magazine republished in 1943–44 as part of J.A.N. No. 1 UNIFORMS AND INSIGNIA, a recognition field manual for the American fighting forces during the war.

  • US NAVY SHOULDER MARKS AND SLEEVE STRIPES (shoulder straps, shoulder boards)
  • US NAVY CAPS AND CAP DEVICES

The cumulative military manual "Joint Army and Navy Publication Number One" (JAN1) was a Joint Army and Navy publication illustrating uniforms and insignia of the navies, armies and air forces of several countries. The collection of plates was prepared by the Military Intelligence Service and the Division of Naval Intelligence of the US War Departement and published as a US Government unclassified public document in the format of a pocket-sized loose-leaf string-tied binder allowing for later additional pages and corrections.

The JAN1 includes 19 pages from the National Geographic Magazine's special issues on Insignia and Decorations of the US Armed Forces, originally presented in several articles in 1943 (see June 1943 and December 1943 editions at archive.org). These formed an integral part of the first issue of JAN1 plates and were published by courtesy of the National Geographic Society.

Today the manual is in the public domain without any known copyright restrictions.
