It’s no secret: anyone that knows me knows that the traditional Brazilian stroganoff recipe is my absolute favorite meal to make for my family. It’s easy, it’s affordable, and it’s so delicious!

As a mother of two toddlers and the wife of an always-hungry man, planning meals is my least favorite “chore”. And this is one of the reasons why I love this recipe so much – it takes me less than 30 minutes to prepare and my toddlers actually CELEBRATE whenever I make it!

There are so many different ways to make this meal that no one could ever feel left out. You could make a chicken stroganoff, a beef stroganoff, or even vegetarian!

My personal favorite is to make the Brazilian chicken stroganoff with potato sticks. I add in some seasoned white rice as well, and it becomes the most perfect meal!

“There is something about the combination of spices and herbs smell that brings me right back to my mom’s kitchen. She would always make me this meal for my birthdays and it was the best lunch ever!”

Stroganoff (or as Brazilians would say, “estrogonofe”) was a staple on our dining table in Rio. Possibly because it is a flavor extravaganza meal while still being fairly affordable. You can use chicken, steak, or make it veggie, too. One of my aunts would even do it with hot dogs! Not the most common choice of meat to throw in it, but it worked.

In my family, we would usually do the chicken version while packing on the veggies to stretch it out. Trying to make it cheaper only made it even more delicious!

We serve with seasoned (“a la Brazilian”) rice and potato sticks on the side. Just thinking about it… makes me hungry!

“American” Stroganoff Vs. Traditional Brazilian Stroganoff Recipe

When I first saw “stroganoff” on the menu of a restaurant in the U.S., I about fell dead of excitement. I ordered it without blinking, even though my husband DID warn me not to get too excited because it probably would not be what I was expecting.

    And boy… was he right.

When the waiter came along with my meal, it was a type of pasta with a milky sauce and some meat on top.

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad, and if you absolutely love the American stroganoff, please don’t get offended. It’s just that for me, having tasted the kind of stroganoff that I’m used to, I did not like what I ordered at all.

And so, I decided: one day I would help as many people as I could to make stroganoff the way I’ve known it, and they would never be the same again.

    So… here we are.

Let’s start with a little FAQ, shall we?

Where do I start when making the Traditional Brazilian Stroganoff Recipe?

Well, you will need to start by shopping, probably. This meal doesn’t require any ingredient that is in fact “specifically Brazilian”, so you will be able to find everything you need at your local store. However, there are some things that are not staples in a “regular” American kitchen, therefore you might not have it.

Do I need to be a knowledgeable cook to make this meal?

Absolutely not. It’s an extremely easy recipe to make, although it does take some time to prepare everything. There are no shortcuts in Brazilian cuisine, even our daily routine involves an hour or so to prepare dinner in the evening… every single day. I wonder what more my grandma could’ve accomplished with her life had she had the crazy amount of “microwavable frozen vegetable bags” available… (those things are amazing aren’t they?!)

Do I need to go to a Brazilian grocery store to make the Traditional Brazilian Stroganoff Recipe?

No, not for this meal. Everything you will use to make Brazilian stroganoff can be found at your local markets, such as Walmart or Amazon.

Is Brazilian Stroganoff a “healthy” meal?

I am not a dietitian or nutricionist. In my understanding, this is a nutrient-packed dish. We will use a lot of veggies, good fats (such as olive oil), and protein. Another note is: if you eat just the stroganoff (without the rice and potato sticks), it seems to be a keto-friendly dish!

Ready to get started and make this amazing Traditional Brazilian Stroganoff Recipe? I know I am!

Let’s start by prepping our ingredients. The full list of ingredients and the how-to recipe is at the end of this post!

I always start by chopping – mostly because it is my least favorite thing to do when cooking – so I get it all out of the way.

Once that is out of the way, I start with the chicken. And I swear to you, there is something about the combination of spices and herbs smell that brings me way back to my mom’s kitchen. She would always make me this meal for my birthdays and it was the best lunch ever!

I start with the chicken because while it cooks I can work on the rice.

The way we make our rice is definitely different than the “norm” in America. I remember the first time my mother-in-law made me some rice (because I told her I really missed it). The poor thing had the very best intention at heart! But for me personally, rice without salt, garlic, and onions is just inedible! She later explained that Americans usually like plain rice (simply cooked in water) or sticky rice. I’m sure this can’t be generalized, but everyone I have encountered agrees with her.

Definitely not me. I can’t eat anything “plain”. Everything needs to have a lot of flavors, spices, and/or herbs!

So, my rice is probably different than yours. But, just to humor me, try this one instead when you make stroganoff! It’ll pair perfectly with the dish, and you might find yourself a new favorite way to eat rice!

I will add in my own recipe for how I make seasoned rice next week – but in the meantime, this recipe is also amazing!

While the rice is cooking, I can finish up preparing the stroganoff. And this is where the Brazilian part comes in full force!

    What is Table Cream?

Table cream is what we use for our creamy tomato sauce in this dish. It is basically, from my research, 18-30% milk fat and no added sugars. Nestle (the brand I personally always use) describes their table cream as “a light cream/table cream that adds creaminess and richness to your favorite savory and sweet recipes”.

We use table cream (also known as “creme de leite” in Brazil) for a whole lot of things! From dessert to savory dishes (like this one), from fruit topper to mixing it with jello in the blender! The options are limitless with this ingredient.

One of my favorite things to use table cream for is joining forces with sweet condensed milk and some avocados for a SPLENDID avocado cream. Next recipe on the blog, maybe? Let me know!

    Back to the point, stroganoff.

As I said, it is an easy-to-make dish that anyone can make. I learned how to cook stroganoff when I was about 10 years old – so if that can happen, you can make it happen too!
